VPN connection to University Network
Why VPN?
The Virtual Private Network (VPN) service allows university students to securely 'tunnel' into the campus network from outside the university and access services as if they were on-campus. It can also be used over campus wireless networks as well. The service may be required by students to access services that are normally restricted to on-campus access only.
This service is provided to students free of charge. Students can use the university's VPN service to:
- Connect to a file share (mapped drive)
- Print to a networked printer from off-campus
- Remotely connect to a university computer (once that computer has been configured for remote access)
- Secure data transactions to the university's network off-campus

- Download the latest version of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
Non UOM Devices
- Download from Unimelb website
- Search for VPN or click on the link below https://studentit.unimelb.edu.au/wireless-vpn/vpn
VPN - FortiClient (VPN access from China)
This VPN solution is optimised to improve the student experience from within mainland China. You will only be able to log in to one computing device at any given time.
Instructions to install the FortiClient VPN can be found here https://lms.unimelb.edu.au/vpn-access-from-china
Connect to University resources from within Australia
If you need to connect to the University VPN from within Australia, please install the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client as per instructions above
Please Note: "FortiClient VPN is not designed to access to internal university resources, which are not accessible outside of the university. You are encouraged to use CiscoAnyconnect to access to such resources. If you need to access internal resources and CiscoAnyconnect is not available in your case, please contact FEIT IT to discuss a solution."
FEIT resources that require an established VPN connection to the University Network
Software license
Most FEIT software’s used for teaching and research purposed are licensed and are running on FEIT license server infrastructure.
If you are using a FEIT license software for research purposes running on the FEIT license server and get any license related error such as cannot connect to license server or licensing error while working off campus, please follow the steps mentioned;
- Connect to UOM VPN
- Close the FEIT software and relaunch
- If you a need a specific FEIT software for research purpose installed on your UOM devices and NON-UOM devices you need to get authorisation from your supervisor via email prior to install and then log a job with FEIT IT via the online form
https://ithelp.eng.unimelb.edu.au/support/servicedesk/index.php - Please Note: Users who breach FEIT software Piracy and illegal use of licenses on UOM and NON-UOM devices will be penalised

How to run FEIT software on Mac OS?
Readily available option for students is
VirtualBox ($0)
Paid available option for students is
Parallels(AU$109.95)
Hardware requirements to run Virtual Box
In order to run VirtualBox on your machine, you need:
- Reasonably powerful x86 hardware. Any recent Intel or AMD processor should do.
- Memory. Depending on what guest operating systems you want to run, you will need at least 512 MB of RAM (but probably more, and the more the better). Basically, you will need whatever your host operating system needs to run comfortably, plus the amount that the guest operating system needs. So, if you want to run Windows 8.1 on Windows 7, you probably won't enjoy the experience much with less than 2 GB of RAM. Check the minimum RAM requirements of the guest operating system, they often will refuse to install if it is given less. Sometimes it malfunctions instead. So you'll need that for the guest alone, plus the memory your operating system normally needs
- Hard disk space. While VirtualBox itself is very lean (a typical installation will only need about 30 MB of hard disk space), the virtual machines will require fairly huge files on disk to represent their own hard disk storage. So, to install Windows 8, for example, you will need a file that will easily grow to several 10 GB in size
- A supported host operating system. Presently, we support Windows, many Linux distributions, Mac OS X, Solaris and OpenSolaris. Check the user manual of the VirtualBox version you are using which versions are supported. For the latest VirtualBox version, see manual
- A supported guest operating system. Besides the user manual (see below), up-to-date information is available at "Status: Guest OSes"
Hardware requirements to run Parallels
- A Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, Core i9, Intel Core M or Xeon processor
- Minimum 4 GB of memory, 16 GB is recommended
- 500 MB for Parallels Desktop application installation
- Additional disk space for the guest operating system (at least 16 GB is required for Windows 10)
- SSD drive is recommended for better performance
- Internet connection for product activation and select features
Please note: Software packages for students to be installed on personal devices such as Windows 10 (Install and reinstall a licensed version of windows) can be downloadable from software for students from the StudentIT website

HOW TO ACCESS "FEIT DESKTOP GPU" ON MYUNIAPPS TO ACCESS FEIT SOFTWARE
FEIT has completed the setup and provisioning the use of physical Engineering teaching lab PCs in a number of locations.
Access to these PCs by students is channeled through the CITRIX MyUniApps gateway, which can be used from any device after connecting to MyUniApps at https://myuniapps.unimelb.edu.au/ users will also be prompted to download and install the CITRIX Receiver application on their device to establish the remote connection.
Please Note:
FEIT Desktop GPU access is currently limited to students enrolled in subjects using Abaqus, Solidworks and MIMICS
Access to FEIT Desktop GPU is based on the subject code and will only be enabled for subjects that required specific software, so that the load of the FEIT lab machines can be montitored and controlled
For all subjects that would benefit from this access, please provide us with the following:
- Subject code
- Subject coordinator
- Number of students enrolled to the subject
- Software title required to access
Access will have to be arranged from University Services with a relatively short turnaround.
How to connect to FEIT Desktop GPU via MyUniApps
Access the MyUniApps page at https://students.unimelb.edu.au/campus-life/campuses-and-facilities/elearning-and-it/myuniapps and install the Citrix Receiver software
Once the Citrix Receiver software is installed, students will be presented with the following page:
Select the DESKTOPS tab, then select FEIT Lab PCs by clicking on the FEIT Desktop GPU button:
The link will then download the Citrix Connector ICA file, which will start the connection to one of the PCs in the accessible pool
Depending on the users’ Internet connection quality, performance of the remote desktop session will be very similar to sitting at the actual lab PC
